What is the Migraine Aura

Everyone who suffers from migraines has a lot in common. First, the pain can at times be almost unbearable. Second, sets of triggers make attacks more likely to occur (though these vary from person to person). Third, symptoms such as light sensitivity and sound sensitivity make the experience more complex than with a typical headache.

The experience of migraine sufferers (also called migraineurs), though, can differ in one core way: the presence or lack of a migraine aura. For those diagnosed with a classic migraine, an aura is present. On the other hand, patients in the throes of a common migraine do not experience that aspect of the disorder. For those in the former category, the aura can be a strange and fascinating (though not welcome) experience.

Migraine Auras: Causes... and What are They?

Unfortunately for anyone suffering with a migraine aura, causes remain unclear. However, it can be understood in part through a top theory on migraines in general.

According to WebMD, current neuroscience on migraines suggests that dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain become imbalanced (1). When this happens, the immune system of the migraineur goes into overdrive, rushing immune cells into the brain. The brain, in response, uses vascular dilation (widening of its blood vessels) to allow room for those cells.

The aura itself is a symptom experienced in between the prodrome (the warning signs that a migraine is on its way) and the migraine attack. Soon before the migraine headache arrives, the aura blares an alert in various ways, including the following:

  • hallucinations
  • blinking lights
  • partial loss of eyesight
  • a tingling sensation in the skin.

Migraine Aura Symptoms

The symptoms of a migraine aura itself are typically those listed above, with slight variations. Additionally, there is sometimes a generalized sense of weakness.
However, numerous other symptoms accompany the migraine with aura, symptoms that denote both common and classic migraines. Keep in mind, migraine aura symptoms are limited to a short period of time prior to the attack. The attack itself usually lasts between a few hours and three days.

These are common attack symptoms:

  • digestive difficulties (including vomiting)
  • quickness to frustration
  • sensory hypersensitivity (particularly sounds and lights).
