Known Celebrities who suffer from Migraines

You certainly do not need to be a celebrity to suffer from migraines. In fact, there is a huge pool of migraine sufferers, statistics show, in the US: 40,000,000 Americans have the neurological disorder. Migraine sufferers not only deal with excruciating head pain; they also often see their migraine attacks compounded with symptoms such as vomiting and light sensitivity.

Another way to look at migraine prevalence is by percentage: more than 1 out of every 10 people in the United States are migraine sufferers, statistics from the Migraine Research Foundation suggest. With a health problem so painful, it's helpful to know that there are others out there who "know what it feels like." As it turns out, even with all the glitz and glamour of fame, numerous celebrities are all too familiar with migraine (1).

Three celebrities with migraine

These three top names are just a few of the celebrity migraine sufferers who have spoken out about their issues or been covered in the news after having an attack.

1.    Marcia Cross – You may recognize this actress from her role on Desperate Housewives. Cross has been struggling with the disorder since she was a teenager. In one interview (2) , she mentioned that migraine created disconnection in her personal life; now, though, she's found yoga and reducing chocolate consumption to be helpful.

2.    Lisa Kudrow – Kudrow became a household name from her prominence on the hit show Friends. Like Cross, she first experienced migraine headaches during her childhood (3). Migraine is a hereditary disorder, so it's no surprise that Lisa's father also experienced chronic head pain – though his were of the "cluster headache" variety.

3.    Ben Affleck – According to the US Department of Health and Human Services (4) about 75% of those with migraine are female. Nonetheless, that still means close to 10 million migraineurs are men, including Ben Affleck.

Migraine headaches have sidelined Affleck at numerous points during stardom. Seven years ago, he was rushed to a hospital for migraine treatment. He missed a charity poker tournament in 2010 for the same reason (5).

No one would wish the pain of migraine on anyone else, but seeing these high-profile figures grappling with the disorder reminds us just how powerful it is.
