How to Beat Holiday Stress

For many migraineurs and headache sufferers, stress is a trigger of attacks. We often glamorize the holidays as joyous, carefree occasions, but we all know that they can be hectic with all the moving parts and get-togethers. We all want to be free of migraines when celebrating with friends, family, and coworkers.

Plus, stress is nothing to take lightly. It's a contributing factor to mental disorders, such as depression, and physical disorders, including diabetes and heart disease. In other words, the threat of headaches is just the tip of the iceberg. The following stress relief tactics can help you stay calm this holiday season:

  • Look on the bright side – Renowned stress researcher Hans Selye says that it is all about perspective. The better you self-reflect and convert any pessimistic thoughts into optimistic ones, the less damaging stress will be when you experience it.
  • Go outdoors – Research suggests that spending time outside in natural settings reduces any harm that stress might be causing to our bodies. Spending a few moments in the midday sunshine also replenishes vitamin D supplies, which become depleted during the colder months.
  • Inhale the scent of relaxation – Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine, based on taking light whiffs of essential oils, that some believe can work wonders for stress reduction and the prevention of migraines. Studies show that lavender is particularly calming, while lemon enhances a sense of positivity.
  • Nix the coffee – If you want to avoid headaches, consider replacing the dense caffeine of coffee with the tension-relieving power of tea. Drinking tea consistently may have anti-inflammatory effects, which can aid your circulatory system. After 45 days, hormones are reduced that arise from tense situations.
  • Let it go – We all take ourselves too seriously sometimes. The expression that "laughter is the best medicine" is actually not that far from the truth. It's an all-natural form of stress relief. Laughing on a regular basis helps us fight off sickness and may optimize the pain threshold, making migraine attacks more bearable.
  • Connect with others – Developing strong ties with other people has been proven to lower stress levels. Studies have shown that intellectual tasks affect blood pressure levels less when multiple people are involved. Women are especially prone to blood pressure fluctuations when alone in tense situations.
